When you travel around the world you could sometimes encounter places you recognize from the world of movies and TV. In cities like Los Angeles and New York, where most films for international audience have been shot, one could easily spend several days just visiting a bunch of those sites.
Here are some of the places we’ve visited that you might recognize from movies you’ve seen …
10. Escape from Alcatraz (San Francisco, USA)
Perhaps the most famous prison in the world and one that appeared in lots of films over the years. One of the most famous is perhaps Escape from Alcatraz from 1979 with Clint Eastwood in the leading role. Another great movie from this site is The Rock from 1996 with Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage.
9. Eat, Love and Pray (Ubud, Bali Indonesia)
Based on the bestselling book and filmed with Julia Roberts in the leading role. Some of the film’s nicest scenes were filmed around the riceterraces in Ubud, Bali.

8. Sleepless in Seattle (New York City, USA)
Although the movie title points to the nice city in north-western United States, the most famous scenes are from the Empire State Building, New York City. This is where Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan meet at midnight on Valentine’s Day, which is a reference to the older film An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr.
7. Angels & Demons (Rome, Italy)
The second film based on a novel by Dan Brown with Tom Hanks starring as Robert Langdon. Almost the entire movie is like a tourist guide of the center of old Rome and includes scenes from the Vatican, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Castel Sant Angelo.
6. Thelma & Louise (Grand Canyon USA)
At the end of the film, the women, played by Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, are chased by the police and in the final scene they’re standing by the edge of the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
5. Moonraker (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
In this James Bond classic a dramatic battle with the villain named Jaws are set on the cable car up to Pao de Acucar, the sugarloaf, a few steps from Copacabana.
4. Batman Begins (Sólheimajökull glacier in Iceland)
When director Christopher Nolan took on Batman with Christian Bale in the lead role, a part of the film was made up to be in Tibet, but it was actually filmed on a glacier in Iceland.
3. Notting Hill (London, England)
In the romantic comedy movie Julia Robert and Hugh Grant meets in, Notting Hill, a cozy neighborhood in London that is known for its antiques market. Hugh Grant runs a bookstore for travel literature whose door is painted blue, and even if you can not find it anymore, you’ll experience similar environments.
2. Star Wars (Tikal Guatemala)
In the original first film, now fourth, the rebels have their base in the jungle by the Tikal temples in Guatemala, or Yavin 4 as it is called in the film.
1. Pretty Woman (Beverly Hills USA)
In the movie Richard Gere pick up Julia Robert at Hollywood Boulevard, drives along Melrose Avenue but then most of the movie is set on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.
