Deetlefs winery is located in the beautiful Breede River Valley just outside Rawsonville in the Western Cape just beneath the Toitskloof mountains. The mountains gives the grape plantations shade and cooler temperatures during extended hours which helps to develop the flavors of the grapes.
The land consists of several different types of soil which affects the grape character and this is something they take advantage of. Deetlefs produces many varieties of wines and has received great reviews on their Sémillon.
A visit to Deetlefs Wine Estate is highly recommended. The vineyard has really nice wines and you will get a warm reception by the staff.
During our visit we had the privilege of a tour by Kobus Deetlefs and then got an extraordinary wine tasting with Ferdi Visser who is winemaker at Deetlefs. We tested a large number of wines and got lots of interesting information about wines and wine making. We were very fond of the vineyard Pinotage and Chenin Blanc which we highly recommend, and obviously their red and white Deetlefs Familie is fantastic.
Deetlefs vineyard is one of the oldest in South Africa and run by the same family since 1822. Today it is managed by Kobus Deetlefs which is the sixth generation in the Deetlefs family to run the vineyard. Kobus has himself been trained in Oenology and Viticulture at Stellenbosch University.
