The capital of Yucatán is a real Mexican city that is not shaped by tourism but of history. Mérida was founded by conquistadors on the remains of a Mayan city in the middle of the 16th century. In the center of Merida there are lots of old buildings in colonial style.
The street signs on many of the buildings in central town are really charmingly painted and feature small icons.
